Breaking Down the Work CPMGT / 300 August 8, 2016 Dr. Martine Anderson
2 Breaking down the Work Once a project management plan is set, then the project manager needs to create a WBS or a work breakdown structure. A work breakdown structure is a “project network-modeling step in which the entire job is graphically subdivided into manageable work elements (Web Finance, INC. 2015).” In other words, by creating a work breakdown structure, then the project manager is breaking the project management plan into smaller, simpler steps. The purpose “in planning a project, the project manager must structure the work into small elements that are: manageable, in that specific authority and responsibility can be assigned, independent, or with minimum interfacing with and dependence on other ongoing elements, integratable so that the total package can be seen, and measurable in terms of progress. (Kerzner, 2013)” Mattress Firm (MF) has a project management plan to adopt a new Human Resources Information System. The need to combine all employees onto one common Human Resource Information System (HRIS) is pertinent . This is an ongoing project to not only continue the business to grow but to also institute new policies and procedures. A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result (Project management, 2013).
