The problem with the Collision Model is that the rate of the reaction is much smaller than the collision frequency. (Only a small fraction of the collisions produce a reaction.) Svante Arrhenius (1880s) Proposed the idea of an activation barrier an amount of energy has to be overcome before a reaction can occur.
