Neurotransmitter Removal NTs can be removed from synaptic cleft by being either taken up into the presynaptic terminal or broken down by enzymes (like AChE) in the synaptic cleft COMT and MAOs break down NE, dopamine, serotonin MAOIs inhibit the breakdown of NE, dopamine, serotonin and were the original drugs used to treat depression II. Various NTs Main inhibitory NT in CNS – GABA (opens Cl - channels); diazepam & barbiturates are agonists Main inhibitory NT in spinal cord – glycine ; strychnine blocks these channels, Endorphins (endogenous enkephalins) are small peptides that can act as hormones or NTs Purines (ATP, AMP, adenosine); adenosine is inhib. in brain & vasodilatory in heart THC and anandamide (endocannabanoid) can cause the munchies Gases – CO and NO (vasodilatory) III. Summation, etc.
