9/25/07 IAS South Asia Population -1000 79 million -1500 105 million Castes: Brahmin Kshatriya Vaisya Sudra Salit Indian – It is densely populated. It is connected globally. Indian ocean world – Africa, zenzabar. It is tied to pre-modern global economy. Road in Indian religion. Buddism traveled along with merchant routes as its spread out of India. India is connected to Global Economy. India has social structure that many scholar believe is rigid. It was structured and some what inflexible. Idea of CASTES SYSTEM. Main point- where priority was reside in caste system.*** Many intermarriage between classes. Brahmin = Religious leader. Kshatriya = Warriors, Vaisya = merchants and farmers. Sudra = laborer, peasants, agricultural workers. Dalit = “Untouchables” people who are outside of class and viewed with great suspicion. Mobility from one caste from other increases. Brahmin and Kshatriya worked together. They did not have physical force to have social status to remain in place. So they worked together for political power. Most of the land in Indian subcontinent was owned by Kshatriya. At 1500 there were no place such as India. There were a lot of Kingdoms and principalities. We think of this place as “heavily decentralized”. In northern part there were increasing consolidation. There were begin to be more centralized state. Conquest from north. Lead by Mughals. There are not the Mongols but they were related people. They were muslim. So there were going to be period after 1500 muslim conquest. So it creastes inssues of government. Social political and economic interaction. 1492 = there were a lot of states, socially structured states and held top by religious and military authority. Pretty densely populated. China. 1500 110 million Social order: Scholars (Bureaucrats)

Peasants Artisans, Skilled Craftsman Merchants Largely argricultural. It is increasingly culturally unified. People who took over China adopted Chinese culture. What do conquorers do?
