Hamade 2 Bryan Hamade Professor S. Murphy POLS 1101-012 15 March 2008 When the US first came into being it was a great nation run by brilliant men. These great men, for the most part, did what they felt was best for the country and its citizens. Now in 2008 all has changed. The United States political process is being dragged down and eroded by the endless bickering of an unforeseen two party political system which this great country has mistakenly adopted. If one wants to elect someone in modern America usually the decision comes down to Democrat or Republican. The current approach to political understanding by laymen leads to a grave misunderstanding of the political process. Most people look at their political affiliation in terms of what party they like the most or what party their parents voted for, not who the candidate actually is and what they actually do or want to do. This has led to people being woefully uninformed when it comes to voting. The Republican Party was originally founded as a party supporting small government with more state rights. This is why most people in

Hamade 3 the past voted for the Republicans. Flash-forward to 2008 and the modern Republican party is practically unrecognizable. This current Republican Party supports constitutional bans on gay marriage and abortion which directly contrasts Republican ideology of yesteryear where state rights were important to them and less national government control was important as well. This evolution into the opposite of what it once was is terrible; this causes many important issues to fall through the cracks like the current problem with medicinal cannabis. In the United States cannabis is illegal under Federal law. Certain states have legalized cannabis for medicinal use; these states are Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The legalization of Medical Marijuana was a definite step in the right direction since recent studies have shown cannabis to be a more effective and side effect free alternative to the various pain medications given to those suffering from debilitating painful disease such as cancer and AIDS. The pain medications usually dispensed out cause nausea and are also highly addictive, while in contrast Medical Cannabis promotes
