1 STAT 2000 Chapter 1 Statistics: The Art and Science of Learning from Data Agresti-Franklin Statistics is: the science of designing studies and analyzing the data those studies produce. the science of obtaining information from data. What are some uses of statistics? predicting elections marketing research quality control testing new drugs Terminology Subjects The people, items, etc., that we are studying. Ex: Voters Population All of the subjects in which we are interested. Ex: All people who vote in an election Sample A portion, or subset, of the population for which we have data Ex: People participating in the election poll Terminology contd. Variable A characteristic of interest that may differ from one subject to another. Ex: Which candidate the subject voted for Parameter A numerical value summarizing the population. Ex: proportion of votes for a candidate in an election Statistic A numerical value summarizing the sample data. Ex: proportion of votes for a candidate in an exit poll
