Terminology
Subjects
The people, items, etc., that we are studying.
Ex: Voters
Population
All of the subjects in which we are interested.
Ex: All people who vote in an election
Sample
A portion, or subset, of the population
for which we have data
Ex: People participating in the election poll

Variable
A characteristic of interest that may
differ from one subject to another.
Ex: Which candidate the subject voted for
Parameter
A numerical value summarizing the population.
Ex: proportion of votes for a candidate in an election
Statistic
A numerical value summarizing the sample data.
