The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster Grade Level: 5-6 The Phantom Tollbooth is a great story about a young boy named Milo who doesn’t know what to do with his time. If he is one place, he wants to be somewhere else, and if there is something that should interest him, it doesn’t. He thinks that almost everything is a waste of time until on afternoon when he gets home from school, there is a package addressed to him. Since he doesn’t have anything else to do, he opens the package and follows the directions to build “One genuine turnpike tollbooth.” He goes through the tollbooth using the car and coin that was in the package and embarks on a journey to a land he has never even imagined before, learning about things he’d never thought about. He meets many strange people, most importantly the watchdog Tock and the Humbug who help him to bring the Princesses Rhyme and Reason back to the land of Wisdom and reuniting their brothers King Azaz the Unabridged from Dictionopolis and the Mathemagician from Digitopolis. King Azaz believed that words, which he knew every one, were much more important than numbers so his kingdom must truly the greater; The Mathemagician believed that numbers, which he knew every one, were much more important than words and hence his kingdom was supreme.
