Anth1102 Notes 1/10/08 What is anthropology?  The study of all people across space and time: past, present, and future. Derived from Greek: Anthropos- human logos-study of  Main question is: What does it mean to be human? Human diversity and commonality 1) Holistic-anthropology is the study of the whole entire human condition through  time and across space (biological and cultural) Ex: Biologically we need food to  sustain us. On the other hand there are economical reasons that stop us from  getting certain foods, preferences and taste, and traditional reasons as well.   2) Comparative- constantly comparing customs of one society to another. What is  alike and what is different about cultures. Ex: Polygamy: one culture (Tibet) where one woman marries a lot of husbands and  (Sub-Saharan Africa) where the male marries lots of wives: EMIC: Insiders perspective  on surroundings. Socio-culture: analysis- involving
