COMP 380—Social Networking (Sites)—3/16/2008 Notes “The World Wide Web” Difference between the web and the internet? –The internet exists without the web but not vice versus. The web is a hyper-link of documents that are accessible through the platform of the internet. The term “web” comes out of the term “world wide web.” Time Berners—Lee and hypertext, 1991: coined the term “WorldWideWeb” and “hypertext” (linkable links on various web pages). Web is: 1. Decentralized (means that there is no government entity that says what content can go on the web and what can’t; web is a free and open exchange system) 2. Organized via “addresses” (we call them “sites” but they aren’t actual “addresses”) 3. Based on the internet Risks of decentralization? Why would anyone say we need to regulate the material that goes out on the internet? Kids know how to use it and parents can’t monitor what their children view 24 hours a day. People give out too much information and that’s how they get stalkers.
