Page 2 Why Teach? Essay As the cliché saying goes, “Teachers do not teach to get paid.” So what is it exactly that makes people want to teach? The personal accomplishment you feel when you see a student helping a peer that is struggling? The reward when you get when students come back after five or ten years and tell you how much of an influence you were on their life? In this personal essay, I am going to explore and share the reasons that I have chose teaching as my profession. “If kids come to us [educators / teachers] from strong, healthy functioning families, it makes our job easier. If they do not come to us from strong, healthy, functioning families, it makes our job more important” (Author Unknown). As I was beginning my college courses at Mesa Community College I was very torn between teaching and graphic design as my chosen career. It was then that the movie ‘Freedom Writers’ was released and my life was completely changed. My mom is a teacher and has always encouraged me because I have a compassionate heart, a talent for leadership roles and teaching others and the combination of my mom’s
