E-Voting 18/02/2009 10:55:00 What is e-voting? Using electronic ballots DRE’s (Direct-recording electronic machines) History: 60s-tabulate punch cards 80s-1 st generation DREs 90s-2 nd generation DRE’s touch-screens 21 st century—2000 debacle, Help America Vote Act of 2002 (move to internet voting) Advantages of e-voting: Cost (less capital intensive than paper ballots, compatible interface, decreases cost of recount) o Environmental impact (paper-less voting, energy efficient machines, smart technology). Public Perception o Only 70% of US population is registered and only 45-50% of those actually vote Accuracy (reduces residual votes) o Security Protection (electronic registration, voter verification, digital receipts, reduces “blue-collar” fraud) o Eliminates absentee ballots o User friendly interface o Voter discrepancy recognition (makes sure you don’t vote for 2 candidates; prevents your vote from not being counted).
