Collapse of USSR = definining characteristic of the age a. Absence of all that had shaped foreign policy for the last 50  years b. Every decision had been viewed based on its impact on the  c. Implications: i. Us as “hyperpower” – us is more powerful than every  other country, more powerful than any country in  history ii. End of bipolarity iii. Loss of soviet union as counterweight to the US iv. Military, economic, and cultural dominance v. Increased international tension, including w/ allies –  other countries not ok with one country having all the  power. vi. Other countries passed protectionist legislation –  limiting the #s of US movies, imports, etc.  d. “the End of History” i. Fukuyama – essay turned  book.  ii. Victory against communism, collapse of the USSR
