2/12/08 Purple states – undergoing some sort of transition: Blue state voters moving into a red state o Happens more often – people from the rust belt move south into  red states to find jobs. Red state voters moving to a blue state I. 2000 election = one of the strangest elections ever One of the worst campaigns ever o Most salient characteristic of the campaign was that it was  overwhelmingly boring o Both parties had candidates making calls to national service  McCain, Bill Bradley  brought in some young voters but ended up failing  miserably  both candidates pushing it dropped out and nobody picked it  up o B ush and Gore- as soon as they got the nomination, went for the  center Textbook campaign Cater to the party base for primary wins, then go for  center  Focus group tested campaign messages, very centrist and  The holiday from history – cold war was over, no  major threats on the horizon – foreign policy not an  issue Social security lockbox More people turning out to vote against one candidate  (rather than for the other).  Lots of people didn’t like either one
