2.14.08  there were warnings of terrorist attacks the summer before 9-11, but the  media was too busy w/ shark attacks to cover it… January 01 – blue ribbon commission – Hart-Rudman report o Two democratic heavyweights = chairs o Commission report that literally reported that there was a risk of a  substantial mass-casualty attack on the US mainland.  o Held a press conference to release their findings, and the NYT  reporter left early. If the NYT doesn’t cover it, nobody else is going  to think it’s important.  Tom Fenton –  Bad News o Book criticizing the news industry coverage of terrorism, 9-11 o He was a reporter that had a chance to interview bin laden, but  CBS said no b/c it would cost too much $$ and there would be too  many foreign-sounding names in the report. Sen. Diane Feinstein was on CNN on 7/1, tells Wolf Blitzer that the senate  intelligence committee’s been warned that there’s a threat of attack. o Blitzer then asks her what’s going on in the budget committee.  Politics The first few months of the bush administration Bush administration blows their biggest advantage o Came in w/ a functional republican majority in the senate Actually, it was a 50-50 tie, but w/ dick cheney as a  tiebreaker, they win.  They screwed it up because… o In may, one of the republican senators from VT (Jim Jeffers) quit  the Republican party, declared himself an independent as part of a  deal w/ the Dems.  49-51 b/c he agreed to caucus w/ the democrats.   In return, they agreed to treat him as if he’d been a dem the
