COMM 679 Notes 2.26.08 the book – newspapers – what’s missing? In the American press especially, they avoid showing dead bodies o The way to show respect for the dead is by not showing them o Occasionally they’ll show it but only if there’s huge news value to the image o ? Sanitizing the coverage of the war ? (no bodies in war coverage, if they’re showing bodies, it’s never American bodies) o local news – they always cover car crashes, but they never show bodies either, all news in the US is sanitized The jumper o AP photos. Appeared in a few papers but not on the front page o People shouldn’t be confronted w/ graphic or gruesome pictures on the front page (in case little kids are getting the paper in the morning) o Page 3 of the NYT. They showed the picture in the paper on the Today show and people were appalled. No other news on the front page at all. o Network news for the first 96 hours – no other news was covered. Very little if any discussion of how much of an impact it had. Very little coverage of the PA plane since.
