January 22, 2007 Poli 100 Section 6 Notes What is politics? Why government? Politics includes factors related to: Government National/cultural identities Economics Power Groups Values Everything! (Aristotle did call the study of politics the “master science”). No definition is necessarily right or wrong Trade off broad versus narrow definitions. Real subject should NOT be on subject matter, but rather on process . In this course, we’ll define politics as: A process of making collective decision s that resolve conflicts . In government, politics ends up determining which set of values will guide public policy . A focus on process: Makes politics dynamic. Makes politics independent of outcomes/values. Opens the door for participation. A focus on collective decisions: All members can participate in decisions. Results of decisions apply to/affect all members of the groups (collective goods). While it clearly applies to “normal” politics, this definition also accommodates a broad
