February 12, 2007 Poli 100 Notes African Americans and the Democratic Party From reconstruction through 1932, African Americans voted Republican. Republicans took a stand for abolition of slavery. In 1936, ¾ of African Americans voted for FDR (Democratic) New Deal/economic relief Non-discrimination added to federal programs. Black migration Northward expanded voting power. Calculated move by FDR-outlaw discrimination in federally funded programs (unions). 1948-Truman integrated the military and introduces Civil Rights legislation (killed in Congress by Southern Democrats). LBJ-Civil Rights Act (1964), Voting Rights Act (1965) Increase in African American middle and upper class increase percentage of African American Republicans. Emergence in cultural/religious policy also caused increase in African Americans to vote conservatively (abortion, gay marriage). Civil Rights Movement Successes
