Thomson’s Argument: Thomson assumes (for the sake of the argument): o A fetus is a person o A fetus has a right to life A woman has a right to determine the use of her own body We have a potential conflict of rights. o Esp. when a woman doesn’t give consent and is raped Marquis: An Argument that Abortion is Wrong Arguments based on “personhood” and “rights” lead to stalemates Marquis’s strategy: o –Explain why it is normally wrong to kill an adult human being (The  “future like ours” or FLO account.) o –Defend the FLO account by showing how it fits with and explains our  common judgments about practices having to do with life and death. o
