Gender and Science 20/02/2007 12:12:00 Monday February 26 th  at 7pm –Dr. Hopkins Lecture in Hanes Art Auditorium Brian Gumble NBC Dateline Video Clip:  “The Wrong Stuff?” with Sara James (reporter) Women who want to become astronauts…the top 10 women pilots in America  join together to discuss women astronauts flying in space. Jackie Cochran and Lovlace Clinic recruited women pilots in 1959.   o Jerrie Cobb did so well at the preliminary tests that Lovless went on to  say that women may be better astronauts than men.  She became 1 st  woman trainee to complete every test before going up in the air.  o Jane Hart  married to Senator Phil Hart; mother of 8 children o Wally Funk beat John Glenn on the tests o Of the 25 tested…half passed.  They called themselves the “The Lucky  Mercury 13” o Jerry Truhill o Bernice Steadman NASA in the 1960s  “would rather send monkeys in space before women” o Women were not allowed to do jet test runs but they were allowed to  fly. o March 1962   space mission cancelled at last minute.   Cobb wasn’t allowed up in space.   Cobb protested the decision saying it was sexual discrimination.
