Two leading philosophical methods are currently utilized in determining the moral permissibility of abortion. One of which examines whether or not the fetus has a “right to life” and what these rights mean for the fetus. On the other hand the morality and ethics behind killing is the focus of determining whether or not abortion is morally permissible. The first option of addressing the right to life surrounding the fetus is a hopeless, vicious cycle which results in two stand still ideas. Therefore I propose that the most promising solution to determining the ethics behind abortion is to determine what it is specifically that makes killing immoral. In regards to the discussion of the rights a fetus has to life, each side makes a valid and sound argument. According to Don Marquis each side believes that their claims are obvious and the conclusions clearly follow their claims. The anti-abortionist argue that abortion is immoral because life is present from the moment of conception and the fetus contains certain characteristics of a human being. Thus to anti-abortionists it seems to follow logically that abortion is the same as murder. On the other hand, the pro-choice side argues that a fetus is not a person and does not contain the moral capacity similar to that of a human being, thus a fetus has
