Donovan Miske DES 2/2/09 Lab 3: Testing Hypothesis about Mitosis Sec 1 Jeffery Pre-lab Purpose Statement In this lab our goal is to learn the scientific method while broadening our knowledge of cell division. Mitosis is an exceptionally important concept to include in ones foundation for all other biological studies. By studying onion root tips we hope to formulate an idea of time intervals between points in the cell cycle while constructing a scientific process to get to our conclusion. Methods Summary a) First get familiar with each stage of mitosis. 1. Gap 0 (G0) Cell is at rest 2. Gap 1 (G1) If the environment will permit the cell increases in size and produces RNA and synthesizes protein. 3. Synthesis (S) DNA is replicated 4. Gap 2 (G2) The cell keeps growing and reaches a checkpoint to make sure it can proceed to the next step 5. Mitosis (M) Mitosis is much shorter of a phase than Interphase lasting only one to two hours. It also has a checkpoint to make sure it can continue. Prophase: Nucleolus fades and chromatins condense into chromosomes.
