Week 5 Lecture Outline I. Ideology – An Idea Put into Action a. Ideological Text – When a text makes a claim about the world that its audience lives in. How are ideologies enforced? b. Hegemony - When an ideology is dominant. Dominant ideologies are the ideas that are prevalent in a society. They are commonsense. - Oprah “Big Give” as example of dominant American ideologies. c. Hegemony is also the “power or dominance” that one social group holds over another. It is also a method for gaining power. -Antonio Gramsci-persecuted in Fascist Italy. Wrote about how mass media are used as tools by the ruling elites to “perpetuate their power, wealth, and status (by popularizing) their own philosophy, culture, and morality.” -How is capitalism enforced on us? How is communism enforced in communist countries? How are potentially resistant movements/cultures incorporated into the hegemonic ideology? -Examples: Youtube Capitalism video, “Plastic People of the World”,
