Thursday, November 13, 2008 Socialism, Part 2 Karl Marx on Alienation, History, Capitalism and Human Nature Karl Marx Alienation -has a critique of capitalist society, human essence detached from human existence (two things that belong together have been separated) -we are separated from our essence in capitalist societies -we are concourse, free, creative producers whose work is punishing, degrading, commodified (something that is bought or sold on a market), labor has become something that is bought or sold -workers lives are subject to alien forces -there is alienation from the product, we are mystified by our product, we done understand completely how they work, we are also dominated by our products -there is alienation in productive activity -we are alienated from our species-being, we are social by nature, but this social side of our existence is blind to us -finally we are alienated from other human beings , we are separated from one another mainly via working class division, even in the working class we are separated from one another
