Tuesday, September 09, 2008 Political Science: Class #2 Politics, Power, Authority Federal Election: Oct 14 th -third general election in 4 years -ignores fixed election date: Oct ‘09 Parliament: 308 seats -conservative 127 -liberal 95 -Bloc Quebecois 48 -NDP 20 -Independent 3 -Green 1 -Vacant 4 Why Now? Has the government been blocked? 70 bills, 3 budgets, 40 confidence votes -economy (Us economy is in recession, we are closely attached to them), Liberals on Environment (have a plan to help the environment, Conservatives want the vote before the liberals can express this plan), Election Finance , Mulroney (he was doing shady business dealing, a conservative), Afghanistan Body Count (not an issue many Canadians really care about, if the death total begins to rise this may become a major issue), Quebec Swing (a lot of people have previously voted for the block may now wasn’t to vote for the Conservatives) What is Politics? -politics: some examples *elections, demonstrations, policy decisions (government policy on health care), Law making (on taxes etc), Politics matters - Decisions are made that affect you, rules are made and enforced that we have to follow -laws assign rights and duties -decisions are enforces, and you will pay some sort of cost if you do not abide by them
