Crime Theory – Why? *TAP* - What we think about what causes crime influences our response. *TAP* - (Theory 2) Focus on improving conditions. Reduce alcohol/drug use by parents, lead exposure, etc. Home visits by nurses to show how to care for child. Help prevent early risks. Home visits have been very positive in reducing delinquency. *TAP* - (Theory 3) Work on getting prisoners employment when they exit prison. Holding the parents accountable may help deter delinquency. *TAP* - (Theory 4) Physical barriers and police control are all key in deterring crime. *TAP* - (Theory 5) CJ System should increase the cost of the crime and the aggressiveness (get cops to do more). 1) Genetic Theories of Crime – “born with it [crime gene].” a) Lombroso – studied physical characteristics of people to determine the predisposition towards crime b) Twin studies – identical twins may have more in common when it comes to crime than fraternal twins c) Nurture vs. Nature – nurture is more important
