SIGMUND FREUD 2 Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was the founder of psychoanalysis. He wrote that dreams are the “disguised fulfillments of repressed wishes” and provide “the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious mind” (Hockenbury, Nolan and Hockenbury, 2016). He believed that sexual and aggressive instincts are the motivating forces that dictate human behavior. Because these instinctual urges are so consciously unacceptable, sexual and aggressive thoughts, feelings, and wishes are pushed into the unconscious , or repressed. Freud developed an intriguing theory of personality based on uncovering causes of behavior that were unconscious. (Hockenbury et al. ,2016). He believed that when unconscious conflicts became extreme, psychological disorders could result. However, Freud himself was a neurologist, not a psychologist. Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of personality and behavior was based largely on his work with his patients and on insights derived from self-analysis. Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of personality also provided the basis for a distinct form of psychotherapy. Many of the fundamental ideas of psychoanalysis, such as the importance of unconscious influences and early childhood experiences, continue to influence psychologist and other professionals in the mental health field. He focused on stages, identified with early childhood, the unconscious aspects of personality. Freud was born to a wool merchant, Jakob, and his second wife, Amalie, in Freiberg, Moravia, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, on May 6, 1856. This town is now known as Příbor and is located in the Czech Republic. For most of his life, he was raised in Vienna, and he was married there in 1886 to Martha Bernays. They had six children. His daughter, Anna Freud, also became a distinguished psychoanalyst. In 1896, Freud coined the term psychoanalysis. This
