BSCI 106 Fall 2008 p.1 Dr. Sara Via Heat lost through respiration From Communities to Ecosystems Ecosystems: formed by linking multiple communities and their physical environment Ecosystem properties control energy flow and cycling of nutrients and water Can’t be understood by looking only at communities Physical environment creates context for biotic environment Climate and seasonality influenced by Tilt of earth Latitude Location of land masses and mountains Different rainfall/temperature combinations produce very different conditions (BIOMES—more on this later) What cycles, what doesn’t? Nutrients (C, N, P) cycle– they are used over and over again. Water cycles– also reused. Where was that water in your orange juice before you drank it this morning?? Energy doesn’t cycle- comes from the Sun, leaves as heat. Primary Production 98% of sunlight is reflected from the Earth.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
