SOCY/WOST 3046 Journal Entry 1 Class 2 “Reproduction in Bondage” This article focused mainly on the treatment of black women during the time of slavery. Women slaves were treated like cattle so to speak; they were forced to mate with men that they had no kind of relationship with. Some women could have as many as 12 kids or even more. The more the children slave women would produce meant the more money that the slave owner would make. This was due to a law which gave sole ownership to the slave owner of any child born to any of the slave women on a given plantation. This is sickening to hear that these kinds of practices were done to human beings by other human beings. It is also an awful and disgusting tragedy to read how slave masters would dig holes for pregnant women’s bellies so that they could savagely whip them without damaging the unborn child. It is also sad to know that slave women’s children could be traded to other plantations without even allowing the mother’s to hug there children goodbye. This had to be so emotionally distraught for these poor slave women to carry the fetus in their womb just to have them taken away from them once
