Kendice Ogilvie Assignment #4 Writing 1370 October 14, 2008 The Power Of Context Dissected An essential theme that Malcolm Gladwell elucidates in the book, The Tipping Point, is the power of context. This is significant because Gladwell shows that chain reactions within societies occur from minuscule changes in human behavior, actions and perceptions. Furthermore the “broken window effect” is created by subtle individual changes, which in turn, create larger transformations in the environment. These changes in the environment can spread from affecting one individual, to a community and possibly a nation consequently having a large impact. The “broken window effect” and contagiousness is shown through various epidemics such as disease, fashion and crime. The “broken window effect” creates a series of events that are sudden and unpredictable. An example of the Gladwells’s broken window effect could be something as simple as an individual witnessing someone cheating on an exam, and in response they might cheat on the following exam because someone else did it and it must be justifiable. The “broken window effect” could be the explanation why the crime rates in New York were so high in 1992. Gladwell explicates in his text “In 1992, there were 2,154 murders 1
