Kendice Ogilvie Writing 1370 Assignment #4 October 26, 2008 A Mythological Heroes role in Modern Society Hero’s are indispensible, but that doesn’t mean their attributes and trajectory of how they became one can’t be imitated by people in modern society. In the book The Hero with a Thousand Faces , Joseph Campbell explicates the rite of passage. This is significant because the rite of passage is one of the most essential elements to becoming a hero. The trajectory of the rite of passage is a vital process to becoming a hero, which consists of three steps, separation or departure, trials and victories of initiation and the return and reintegration with society. Furthermore this trajectory is revealed in modern society through parenthood. In addition the attributes are revealed in response to acts of terrorism. Attributes exposed by mythological heroes are seen today in modern society; therefore mythological heroes do play a role in today’s society. The trajectory of the rite of passage: separation, initiation and the return will vary from hero to hero. Heroes have had a special way of becoming who they are and what they have discovered through the same trajectory. Not only does this provide for the differences between these mythological heroes but also for the similarities. Campbell 1
