NOTES FOR BIOLOGY 1002 SECTIONS 005 and 006 Outline 1A CHAPTER 18 Systematics : Seeking Order Amidst Diversity Organizing or grouping things helps in dealing with life. Example: Grocery store The same idea holds true for the study of life. Organisms are arranged or grouped by the science of systematics. --- Systematics is the part of biology that reconstructs the phylogeny of an organism and studies the diversity of living organisms. --- Phylogeny is the evolutionary history of an organism In order to do this systematics relies on taxonomy --- Taxonomy is the branch of biology concerned with naming and classifying the diverse forms of life. There are many ways that things may be grouped One of the earliest classification schemes placed the animals in one group and the plants in another. The bacteria, fungi and many protists were considered plants while some of the protists were grouped with the animals. However, as more information about the organisms was exposed and as more organisms were discovered it became more and more apparent that this technique was insufficient . It is both logical and useful to use a grouping method in which categories are further divided into smaller and smaller groupings creating an organizational hierarchy . The major taxonomic categories from most inclusive (biggest set) to least inclusive (smallest set) are: Domain Kingdom Phylum/Division Class Order Family Genus Species Did King Philip Come Over For Good Sex?
