Regulation of Protein Synthesis Those genes that are always on, are called constitutive = not regulated Genes for glucose utilization are constitutive Regulation of non-constitutive genes: Either slow the process (i.e. dim the lights) and you still spend some energy and get some proteins produced in low quantities for a given gene Turn it off completely (i.e. hit the off switch) and expend no energy/produce no proteins for a given gene

Regulation of Transcription Repression: a gene is blocked from transcription by a specific chemical that binds to the region of a gene called an operator Chemical called an active repressor protein If operator is blocked, RNA polymerase cannot transcribe gene Co-repression: same as repression but the repressor protein requires the presence of an additional protein in order to effectively bind to the operator and block transcription Helper chemical is called a co-repressor Induction: an actively repressed gene can be re-activated or induced
