Notes for Biological Physics Introduce TA, Show books, Show web page, Go over prereqs. Schedule Labs The goal of physics – explain natural phenomena in terms of basic laws of nature Applied to all aspects of nature, biology included Historically, many periods where new progress in physics or biology led to flourishing of interdisciplinary research, but basic difference in approach of bio and physics. Much of bio is identifying and cataloging how bio systems work. More focus on what happens than on the underlying laws of nature. Physics has had an important role in developing new experimental tools – electron microscope, light scattering, x-ray scattering, magnetic resonance, … Provide ability to capture information about detailed bio mechanisms in ways that were not possible previously. The current revolution in nanotechnology has led to a spurt of this type of activity – quantum dots as dyes, nanoprobes – nanowires, AFM, STM, near- field scanning optical microscopy, … This application of physics methods to answer bio problems is very important and exciting, but not what the course will be about. Constitutes use of physics to make probes that let one answer biological questions, but not necessarily address the underlying laws of nature in new ways. Goal of this course is to look at cases where fundamental laws of nature help us
