Definition of a drug Traditional Definition : A drug is any substance that alters the physiology of the body. However this definition also includes food and other nutrients. Alternatively , a drug is defined as an exogenous chemical not necessary for normal cellular functioning that significantly alters the functions of certain cells of the body when taken in relatively low doses. The distinction between food and drugs is sometimes not that clear. Vitamin C : in orange or as a pill . Caffeine : in soft drinks for taste or in coffee ; it affects the nervous system

Other important definitions 1. Drug Effect: The widespread changes a drug produces in an animal’s physiological processes and behavior. Eg Opiates produce drowsiness and pain suppression. 2. Drug Action: Specific molecular changes produced by a drug when it binds to a particular target site or receptor. Eg Opiates binding to opiate receptors can produce analgesia or reinforcement. 3.
