3.1 Unit 3: Thermodynamics 1. Energy, work and heat: The First Law (sect 7.1 - 7.5) First Law of Thermodynamics (also called the law of conservation of energy): • the total energy of the universe is constant • energy is only converted from one form to another E universe = constant Δ E universe = 0 Δ E universe = Δ E system + Δ E surroundings Δ E system = q + w Energy: the capacity do to work or produce heat Sign of Δ E, q and w: Δ E > 0 q > 0 w > 0 System absorbs energy systems absorbs heat work done from surroundings ON system (gas compression) Δ E < 0 q < 0 w < 0 System releases energy systems releases heat work done to surroundings BY system (gas expansion) What you will be able to do by the end of this unit: • determine the equilibrium constant (K) for a reaction by determining Δ G o . (don’t need to know initial conditions or total pressure at equil.) • Fnd equilibrium constant at any temperature if you know its value at one temperature • determine if a reaction will happen at a certain temperature. (will only need to consult thermodynamic tables)
