Offer a rationale for each characteristic. Goals 2000 • Each student will be able to read, write, speak and listen, and to use math and foreign language skills in ways similar to what he or she will encounter in life. • Each student will be able to apply core concepts and principles from subjects such as math, sciences, the arts, humanities, social studies and practical living to situations and problems similar to what he or she will encounter in life. • Each student will become a self sufficient individual and a responsible member of a family, work group and community. • Each student will be able to think and solve problems both in school situations and in a variety of situations similar to what he or she will encounter in life. • Each student will be able to connect and integrate experiences and new knowledge from all subject matter fields with what he or she has already learned • Each student will successfully complete a high school education. • Each student will make a successful transition to the work place or post secondary education after high school graduation. B. What’s A Good Teacher? Differentiate between expert and novice teachers in the approach to solving classroom problems and types of knowledge they possess. Use an original example to illustrate how an expert and novice might approach a classroom problem differently. Expert Teachers (Q 1-3) 1. Have richer and more elaborate categories for understanding problems in teaching. 2. Work from an integrated set of principles instead of dealing with each new event as a new problem 3. Have a sense of what is typical in classrooms 4. Have knowledge that is solid and thoroughly developed 5. Have mastered a number of moves/routines without thinking 6. In a recent study by the National Education Association three major reasons were given by experienced teachers for why they continue to teach. A. Desire to work with young people – 65.5% (given more by younger teachers, those over 50 and minority teachers) B. Long summer vacation – 36.1% C. Value or significance of education in society – 34.4% D. Job security – 28.9% 7. Expert knowledge as defined by Lee Shulman (1987) a. Academic subjects taught (experience) b. General teaching strategies (bag of tricks) c. Curriculum materials / programs for their subject and grade (resources and toys) d. Subject specific knowledge for teaching (know your stuff) e. Characteristics of students and their cultural background (can you relate?) f. Settings in which students learn (environment counts!) g.
