HUEC 1000-February 6, 2006 History of Home Economics -The history of home economics is closely related to the development of education opportunities for women, American public education, and the belief that education should help improve the well being of individuals and families and the development of physical science and technology. 1826 First public high school for women in Boston Established the trend for the education of women. Federal legislation has strongly supported home economics program development and research. 1862 Morril Land-Grant Act Federal government granted land to establish colleges that included agriculture and mechanics in its curriculum. Three purposes teaching, research, service 1871 Domestic Sciences 1887 Hatch Act Provided financial support to agricultural research (Agriculture Experiment Stations) 1896 4 year program Stanford-first four year college program in home economics 1899 Lake Placid Conference To develop a field of study to bridge the gap between home and family life and
