In both treatments of the mesic and xeric species of loblolly pine respectively, the low nutrient treatments received a lower concentration of nitrogen fertilizer (10 ppm) while the high nutrient treatments received a higher concentration of nitrogen fertilizer (50 ppm). The only manipulative variable is the concentration of nitrogen fertilizer that was used in the low and high nutrient treatments.
