5. Visual Rhetoric 1. Mapplethorpe arrange Lyle Heeter and Brian Ridley in family portrait Style 1. Lyle Heeter stands behind Brian Ridley like husband who assumes a protective role standing behind his wife. 2. The photograph also takes place in traditional space where an upper-middle class family has acquired nice vases, oriental rubs, and leather chairs, all of which suggest nothing about S.M or deviants or sexuality. 1. Mapplethorpe plays off the spectacular kinkiness of their outfits to the normal and fancy environment. 2. Mapplethorpe draws attention to the fact that the Leatherman might live as domestic partners in fancy upper east side apartment. While they might engage in deviate behavior, they also practice normative behavior 3. The environment portrays the idea that these partners might live double lives, going work and wearing suits. 4
