EECS 161 - Introduction to Computer Networking Scott Jordan Internet / Flow Control UCI University of California, Irvine Ideas: - packets are numbered to detect loss - received packets are acknowledged (ack) - packets not ack’d within some time (called a "timeout") are retransmitted - the source can transmit at most W packets before waiting for acks - W is adjusted according to estimates of congestion In the Internet, these tasks are standardized by the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). Application Interface A direct interface to TCP is available through the use of "sockets"
