Unformatted text preview: Sustainable Agriculture [To halt extinction] the first step would be to cease "developing" any more relatively undisturbed land…even so, ending direct human incursions into remaining undisturbed habitats would be only a start…the indispensable strategy for saving our fellow creatures and ourselves in the long run is to reduce the scale of human activities. E.O. Wilson and P.R. Ehrlich Sustainable agriculture A system that can indefinitely meet the demands for food at socially acceptable economic and environmental costs. Some Elements of Sustainable Agriculture Green manure : cover crops that fertilize the soil and protect if from erosion Integrated pest management : control of weeds and disease with reduced amounts of chemical pesticides Reduced tillage : avoid deep plowing of soil Residue management : effective ways of using crop and animal wastes, like mulching and composting Rural Values program The Soil Erosion Question : How much should the Public be willing to sacrifice so that farmers will conserve soil? A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic community....
