Abstract During the Physics 201 Lab, students conducted an experiment called the “Vibrating String” to study the relationship between frequency, tension, wavelength and speed of a string that is being vibrated. Standing waves are defined as a vibrational patterned created within a medium when the frequency of the source causes reflected waves from one end to interfere with incident waves from the source. Two strings of different thicknesses were vibrated until their standing waves were noticeable and then the tension and frequency of the wavelengths were calculated out and recorded on a data table. Students predicted that as the wavelength increases, the tension of the string decreases. Introduction The purpose of this experiment was to see how tension and wavelength affect the frequencies and calculate the mass of the string and the hanging weight off it. The experiment revolved around the idea of a resonating string, and how manipulating the tension and length of the string or using a new string with a different weight added to it can change the frequency of the string. The picture below is a representation of how this experiment was set up so that students can study the theory.
Procedure First, the mass and length of two strings, nylon and cloth, were measured in centimeters and grams. Readings were converted to meters and kilograms. The nylon string was
