Unformatted text preview: 28 January 2005 Jery Stedinger Lecture ## 597 News of the Day 28 January 2005 Jery Stedinger Lecture ## Train Derailment Spills Acid in California Desert March 4, 2008 www.ens-newswire.com/ens/mar2008/2008-03-04-091.asp MECCA, California, March 4, 2008 (ENS) Fire officials say 28 cars derailed two miles north of Mecca, a farming community of 3,000 people. The train was hauling tanker cars full of hydrochloric acid, a corrosive substance, and phosphoric acid, which is milder. Both acids were spilled when the train derailed, but officials cannot now tell how much acid was spilled until they can get closer to the damaged cars. Officials are keeping the general public out of a one mile radius around the site.
