i. How it happened: Jews lost covenant with God; proof = Temple gone, lose Jerusalem, allows hundreds of thousands to die ii. Jeremiah’s line: “God will find new covenant with religion in heart” = Christian proof 2. Christians against Jews a. “Epistle of Barnabas” = responding to Jewish cursings (Birkat ha-Minim = edict against dissenters/the others, against Nazareans—curse against those who diverge from Rabbinic Judaism) i. Fake, forgery—get ideas from prophets ii. Argues Jews upset because different practices = should not belong— reasons: 1. Don’t understand Law of Moses—allegory, don’t take commandments literally iii. From Paul: Abraham gets promise from God before circumcision—saved because of faith (before Sinai) = God always intended Gentiles to be saved; church fathers did this for every Gentile 1. Behavior and deeds will save you, not physical markings b. “Melito of Sardis” = first to use term “deicide” (killing God) to describe Jews c. Justin Martyr = focuses on Sinai: treats Trypho as dumb i. Uses allegory to prove God in Jewish Bible was Jesus in pre-existent form —existed from creation in different forms ii. God = abstract, always intermediary = angels iii. Scripture is Christian’s because Jews interpreted it all wrong iv. Benefit to Christians = gives them longest history, antiquity, ancestors, legitimization v. Rome doesn’t believe this vi. Explains why Christians only follow 10 commandments (Moses gets 613 commandments) 1. God only gave Moses 10 original commandments, when Moses goes back to get 2 nd set, gave 613 to punish Jews 2. Those who follow 613 = sinned at Sinai and never to be saved 3. Christians follow 10 because they have stopped sinning
