Parthenon and Panathenaic Procession The Parthenon was in Athens – Rectangular building 100m long by 50m wide. Centaurs vs. Lapiths Lapiths were from Thessaly They were cousins of the Centaurs (half-man, half horse) Lapiths were good horsemen! Myth:  The Lapiths hold a wedding and the Centaurs smell the wine and try to  rape the bride. At the Fireze they had animal sacrifices   The Panathenaia Happened every 4 years, lasted 8 days in August Contests for boys and men, equestrian contests, music, feasts and other  entertainment, awarding of prizes and a procession The procession went through Athens starting from east Fireze, wore Peplos  (sacred clothing woven for Athena) Myth: Gaia gives Erichthonius to Athena At age 7 girls go to Acropolis to serve Athena o Weave peplos o Sneak out the night before the Greater Panathenia through a door (near the  shrine of Herse and friends.) End the procession in Kerameikos o Panathenaia amphora, get oil from the olive tree, false top One side depicted Athena and the other side depicted the games The goal of the procession was not the Parthenon but of the cult state of Athena  Polias in the Erectheum.
