Chapter 6 – Memory Information Processing Theory Behavioral school – learn behavior directly Act – then think Cognitive School Think – then act Memory The process by which the human mind: Takes in information and changes its form and content (encoding) Holds information (storage) Gets information when needed (retrieval) The First System of Memory: Sensory Memory The initial, momentary storage of information, lasting only an instant Constantly bombarded with sensory stimuli Capacity enormous Duration brief – 1-3 seconds Most stimuli lost Stimuli given attention – selected for further processes Attention Getters Size Intensity Emotion Novelty – something occurs that is different Incongruity - if something doesn’t fit The Second System of Memory: Short-Term Memory When stimulus given attention moves to short-term memory May hold approximately 7 to 9 bits of new information Holds information for approximately 15 to 25 seconds
