Subjective Reality is a relatively recent, yet incredibly enticing, notion of the physical world around us. Within the next few pages, I hope to prove the credibility of such a theory and emphasize the control it gives each individual over their own lives and universe. After backing up my theories with either proven statistics or widely accepted ideas, I’ll attempt to expand on them and introduce powerful conclusions drawn from common-sense deductions. This term paper will hopefully convince the reader of the existence of an alternate reality, the possibilities of which are endless. First, we should find a suitable definition of subjective reality. Meriam-Webster’s online dictionary defines the word “subjective” as “a theory that limits knowledge to subjective experience.” One can simply apply this to a generic form of reality, but it’s most likely not appropriate to have the word in the definition. Steve Pavlina has a much better description. “Subjective Reality is an integrated belief system where consciousness and awareness are primary.” (1) This basically states that a person’s individual experiences and perceptions in life directly influence the “reality” in which they perceive themselves and their surroundings. Simply put, “In a truly subjective universe, there is nothing outside your own consciousness – no world, no bodies, no brain.” (2) This may sounds contradictory to the basic constants and concepts about life and the universe, but there is growing evidence that the world we life in is much stranger than anyone could ever imagine. The best way to begin proving the subjectivity of reality is with Einstein’s theory of relativity. To summarize it quickly, Einstein stated that time and space, the very fabric of the cosmos, are relative to the observer. Light is the universal speed limit for anything

and everything. If we were to travel the speed of light, then we would find that our internal clocks, and to our view the rest of the universe, had become literally frozen in time. This is actually quite true, but only for the person in motion. The rest of the inhabitants of the universe would not notice any difference to their daily lives. So, the universe as a whole could not possibly have a “universal clock.” Each observer must have their own universe with their own clock that increases or decreases depending on his/her velocity. Another interesting concept or relativity is again related to motion. If an observer at rest (we’ll say on the surface of the Earth for this experiment, even though they would then not be at rest) were to view an object passing by them at close to the speed of light, the object would appear to shrink. However, all the tests humans have thus far been able to conduct on the matter have proven this to be more than illusory. Objects traveling at speed close to that of light actually do shrink. This is, of course, only true for an outside observer. The object doesn’t perceive itself as shrinking. So technically, an object does
