How much of an effect does ambient temperature have on performance? It affects whether or not heat is able to be lost during exercise. Better performance during cooler days than warmer days. 2. During exercise, we become progressively more dependent on evaporative heat loss as we work harder, or if the environment is warmer. 7. How does blood flow to the skin play a role in heat loss or retention? Blood carries heat… 8. How tightly controlled is our core body temperature, based on the factors of shivering and sweating? Shivering and sweating produces or releases heat respectively in order to maintain core temperature. 9. What is the key central nervous controller of body temperature (which part of brain)? Hypothalamus 10. Which avenue(s) of heat loss is/are predominant during rest? Radiation and convection if environment is cool 11. During exercise and/or ambient heat, which avenue of heat loss becomes predominant? Evaporation 12. Which does an increase in ambient temperature during exercise affect most: O 2 uptake, or Heart Rate? Heart rate, we need a greater skin blood flow so therefore increase Heart Rate. 13. Why does hydration level affect heart and core body temperature during exercise? Replace the plasma volume lost, increasing circulating volume to maintain temperature. 14. What is the heat index ? What is the H.I. if the ambient temperature is 85 F and the humidity is 75%? ˚ Degrees Fahrenheit + Humidity %. ...85 + 75 = 160 INTEGRATIVE 1. Describe the three main physiological mechanisms that the body has of changing its heat content. Describe the responses of each of these to changes in body temperature. Heat production (decreases as it gets hotter), vasoconstriction/dilation (dilation as it gets hotter), evaporative heat loss (increases as it gets hotter). 2.
