Example of Lab Assignment 2 Social Competence in Peer Relationships Communication Skills Children who have socially competent communication tend to clearly direct their communication by making it clear to whom they are talking. (lab manual, p. 28) Example 1: Julia (3-9)… [said], “I wanna trade. Can I have your blue pen, Tucker (3-5)?” (Obs. Notes, p.30) Example 2 : Davis (3-9) puts sunglasses on. Audrey (3-1) [says], “Davis, can I have your sunglasses?” Davis took the sunglasses off and passed them to Audrey. (Obs. Notes, p. 31). Peer Acceptance Both Julia and Audrey’s behaviors are associated with popular peer acceptance status. Both Julia and Audrey communicated with their friends by indicating their names. Research has found that children nominated as favorite playmates by their peers, also clearly indicated to whom they are speaking, either by addressing the child by name or by establishing eye contact or touching the other child (Hazen, course packet p.51).
