Glass Menagerie Questions Scene One and TwoBen Rosenthal 1.Tom tells the audience about each member of his family. He tells the audience of every character and provides some background on the family’s father. He describes the gentleman caller as “the most realistic character in the play.” Tom also tells us that the play is just a memory and that none of it is realistic. 2.Tension is first noticed between the family in an argument between Tom and his mother Amanda. They argue over how Tom eats his food. Amanda seems to begin the argument by pointing out that Tom had barely touched his food. 3.When Amanda finds out that her daughter Laura had not been attending college, that she paid $50 for her to attend, we learn of Laura’s insecurities. Amanda is upset that she had wasted all her money and that she feels that no gentleman callers will come to Amanda. 4.Laura reveals she is apart from everyone when she reveals that she spends all her time walking around. Instead of doing normal social activities she sticks to herself. 5.The Blue Roses that appears to show Laura’s connection to the one who used to call her Blue Roses. This helps the viewer to remember the scene where Laura confesses the only person she ever liked. 6.Amanda is seen as a weak character who has no control over her children. She can’t keep a steady relationship with Tom and keeps running him out of the house. She was also unclear about what Laura had been doing for the past months. Williams wants us to feel sympathy for Amanda because she is put through such difficult situations in which she has no control over. 7.Laura describes how the boy in the yearbook is important to her because she remembers a lot about him. Amanda however is not interested because he was in Laura’s past a long time ago and he would probably be married by that time already. 8.When the family eats at the beginning of the play they eat without the use of utensils or food props. In a memory it would be difficult to remember what exactly they were eating. These extra effects add a small sense of humor and try to lighten the drama of the play. 9.Some people could apply Laura’s handicap to their own handicaps. Most people have some kind of insecurity that affects them. In Laura’s case, her insecurity is severe while for most people it is smaller. Scenes Three and FourGraham DeShazer 10. In Scene Three, Tom and Amanda are in conflict because Tom is upset that Amanda will not give him any privacy. The conflict began when Amanda returned Tom’s book to the library declaring it to be “filth”. 11. Laura escapes the real world by walking in the park and going to the zoo every day. Tom escapes his unhappiness by going out very late at night and not coming back until the early hours of the morning.
